Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Published by ailema4ever under Drama, Romance Edit This

Saw the movie (FINALLY!) today and I must say that it’s a very interesting view of relationships between people. I couldn’t guess what the ending would be like or how the story progressed, so it’s not a typical drama. It’s rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving sexuality, and smoking.

This time I’m not going to write down the synopsis myself, but if you want to read it, click here.

Would I recommend the movie? Definitely, but not to younger kids (I personally think it should be rated PG-15), since the theme is pretty serious. It involves finding yourself and finding out what you want. It involves finding out whether you’ll be happy when you get what you think you want. It involves commitment versus lust/instant attraction. It makes you think about happiness and relationships in general, what kind of person you’d choose to be your lifetime partner, what kind of relationship you’d like to have with that person, etc.

For that and great acting by all the main characters (Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, and Rebecca Hall), I’ll give this movie a 7.5 stars out of 10. I think the best acting comes from Penelope Cruz, though. She’s really convinced me that she’s such an unstable, tempestuous, erratic person.

Here’s the trailer:

End note: I must say that after watching the movie, I feel glad that I was (have been) so sure about my relationship with my hubby despite our long-distance relationship and that I’m happy with him. Otherwise life would have been so different for me.

Bedtime Stories (2008)

This movie is fun and light-hearted and family friendly. It’s not your regular bedtime story movie and I found myself laughing so hard in some parts. My fave character is their pet (which I’m not gonna tell here). I’ll give this movie 7 stars out of 10, because although it’s fun to watch, I think watching it once is enough he he…

Bedtime Stories

The Story:

Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) works as a handyman in Barry Nottingham’s (Richard Griffiths) mega hotel. The hotel used to be Skeeter’s dad’s and it used to be just a small modest hotel, but Barry Nottingham managed to persuade him to sell the hotel to him. He even promised to make Skeeter a manager of his new hotel in the same location. For years and years Skeeter works diligently in the hotel as he waits for the time when he’ll become the manager in the hotel. However, Barry has chosen his daughter’s boyfriend named Kendall (Guy Pearce) to run a new hotel that he’s going to build.

Meanwhile, Barry’s sister Wendy (Courteney Cox) has lost her job, so she has to go on a job interview in another city. So she leaves her kids Patrick (Jonathan Morgan Heit) and Bobbi (Laura Ann Kesling) in the care of Skeeter and Wendy’s friend, Jill (Keri Russell). Skeeter then makes up bedtime stories with the kids every night they are in his care.

The stories the kids make up turn out to be true in real life - well, in a way. So Skeeter tries hard to make the kids create stories in which he becomes the winner, because he knows that in real life it’ll come true, as well. In fact, because of the kids’ stories, Barry Nottingham actually gives Skeeter a chance to compete with Kendall to be a manager of the new hotel he’s going to build. In the contest, the winner is the one who gives the best idea on the hotel’s overall theme.

However, what he doesn’t know is that the location of the hotel is actually the school where Patrick and Bobbi go to. The same school that Jill is working at. So Barry has pulled some strings to make the government official sign some papers that enables him to destroy the school in order to make his mega hotel. Meanwhile, Skeeter finds himself feeling attracted to Jill as time goes by.

Will Skeeter be successful in winning the contest? What will happen to the hotel and the school? Will Skeeter have a relationship with Jill?

Here’s the trailer:

Spoiler:

Skeeter won the contest, but he managed to ruin his possible career by ruining Barry’s birthday party. Why? He thought he was going to be on fire (due to the kids’ story), so when Barry was about to blow the many candles on his huge birthday cake, Skeeter put down all the candles with a fire extinguisher. He gets fired right away.

Meanwhile, Jill is angry at Skeeter because she thinks that he knows that the new hotel’s location is the school she works in. The kids are also angry at him because of the same reason. Now Skeeter has to think of something to make it all right again.

So Kendall is in charge of the hotel again and he is about to have it demolished, but Skeeter saves the school on time. First he goes to meet his ex-school friend who works in the government office and they manage to make a deal. The deal is that the school stays as is, but Barry can make his hotel near a beach. Barry agrees to this deal.

Then Skeeter decides to open his own modest hotel and named it after his dad. Jill now accepts him as her boyfriend. Kendall gets fired and he now works as a servant in Skeeter’s hotel. Happy ending. Smile

Fido (2006)

Published by ailema4ever under Comedy, Drama, Horror Edit This

Saw this movie with hubby the other day on TV. It’s a pretty crazy/fun/wacky zombie movie. If you want to see zombies being used as house helpers, then this is the one for you. It’s not scary at all, though there are gory moments, too. Thus it’s rated R for zombie-related violence. I’ll give this movie a 6.8 stars out of 10.

The Story:

In the neighbourhood where most people have zombies as their house helpers (one person even has one as his girlfriend!), Helen Robinson (Carrie Anne-Moss) begs her husband to keep one as a house helper, as well. Since Bill Robinson (Dylan Baker) is a very busy father, his son Timmy Robinson (K’Sun Ray) is left to his own devices. He is considered an outcast among his peer group, so when the new zombie comes to their house, he make friends with him. He even names the zombie Fido (Billy Connolly). In fact, not only Timmy is the one who makes friends with Fido, but Helen also starts to care about him.

How do they control the zombies so that they don’t eat humans? By putting some kind of collar on their necks. The owners of the zombies are also given a remote control to help control them in case they get out of hand. Sometimes the collar doesn’t work too well and the zombie starts to get hungry for flesh. This happens when Timmy and Fido are playing outside in a park. Since Fido manages to kill one old lady, the old lady turns into a zombie and this creates chaos since there are more and more zombies in the neighbourhood.

What happens next? The zombie exterminators take Fido away ‘coz they find out that Fido is the one who creates all the problems. Timmy is also to be blame, but because the leader of the zombie exterminators is his neighbour, then he lets the family get away without any punishment. Timmy is sad now ‘coz he’s lost his friend Fido. However, he finds out that Fido isn’t exterminated. Instead, he’s taken to work in one factory, so off Timmy goes to find Fido.

What happens next? Will Fido be able to be together with Timmy again?

Storm Warning (2007)

Published by ailema4ever under Horror Edit This

This Australian horror movie follows one of the usual horror movie recipes: a couple get lost when they’re on holiday and they meet a group of crazy people. The only question is: will they survive or not???

Well, for a satisfying ending and bloody, gory moments, I’ll give this movie a 6.8 stars out of 10. Mind you, though, that it’s rated R for strong bloody horror violence, terror, gore, language, some sexuality and nudity.

The Story:

Rob (Robert Taylor) and his French wife Pia (Nadia Farès) go on a boating trip together, but they get lost when they try to get back to the pier. They end up in a small island inhabited by three guys named Jimmy (David Lyons), Brett (Mathew Wilkinson), their Dad Poppy (John Brumpton), and their fierce dog.

They find a small, messy house and there’s nobody inside, so they get in to find the phone, but to no avail. Then Jimmy, Brett, and Poppy get back home and they threaten to kill Pia and Rob if they don’t get out of their place. As usual, then Pia and Rob must try to get out of their clutches alive, since those three guys intend on making their life miserable, especially after Poppy finds out that Rob has seen their marijuana plants. So Rob and Pia are put in one big barn and there they try to use any tools they can find to fight for their lives. It’s also clear from the start that Pia is going to get raped, so how is she going to survive the attack when it comes?

Here’s the trailer:

Spoiler:

Since Rob’s leg is hurt, Pia has to prepare the necessary traps in the barn since she knows that Jimmy, Brett, and Poppy are going to kill them in the end. She has also prepared a bottle and sharpens one part of it to prepare herself for the “rape” that’s going to happen (I don’t need to tell you where she puts the bottle, right?). Anyway, the first person to come inside the barn is Brett. Rob and Pia pretend to be asleep and then they attack him. Brett ends up dead.

‘Coz Brett doesn’t come back to the house, Poppy tells Jimmy to check up on him and to bring Pia to him. So Pia follows him into the house and when Poppy tries to rape her, his private parts get cut off by the sharp edges of the bottle that Pia has prepared. He runs out to the bathroom and Jimmy comes up to find out what’s going on. Pia manages to run away from the house to the barn. Pia and Rob attack Jimmy, close the barn door, and try to run away with their truck. However, the key is missing, so Pia has to go back inside the house to get it.

Meanwhile, Poppy is able to get rid of the bottle from his private parts and he comes out to get Pia. Pia grabs the car key and try to turn on the ignition while Poppy is coming closer and closer. Pia and Rob are saved from Poppy’s clutch since their dog attacks Poppy. The dog thinks that Poppy is “edible” because it loves the smell of blood.

Jimmy gets out of the barn by force, but before he can do anything much, Pia manages to kill him. So both Pia and Rob are safe in the end. Smile

Music Monday - Kokoro No Tomo

Published by ailema4ever under Music Monday Edit This

Today’s song choice is an old one that I used to hear when I was very young in Indonesia. It’s a Japanese song and I’ll always remember this song, even though I don’t understand the lyrics ha ha ha…Laughing

For some reason, a song is like a smell from the past. Every time I listen to this song, it took me back to the past with that musty smell…a very familiar smell that made me feel comfortable. I feel like being a little girl again, trying to sing the lyrics even though I didn’t understand the meaning. That’s one of the most beautiful things about music or songs, don’t you think so? You don’t have to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music (even though it does help to understand the lyrics, but still…).

So, hopefully you’ll enjoy this song as much as I do…now let me just close my eyes while listening to this song and be transported back to 20 years ago…mmmm…Here’s Mayumi Itsuwa with “Kokoro No Tomo”.
