Breathing Room

The beginning of the movie seems familiar for a horror movie, but I must say that the ending fails to satisfy my curiosity. The ending of this type of movie can make or break it. There’s no good closure at the end of the movie. At least in Saw movies, you understand why the killer is doing what he’s doing, but in this movie, the ending makes you feel that the whole thing is just plain insane and there are too many loopholes in it. So, I’ll only give this movie only a 5 stars out of 10.

Breathing Room

The Story:

Tonya (Ailsa Marshall) is in a dark room, seemingly confused. After a while she finds a door into a big room with several people in it. She’s naked and a man rushes to her with a blanket to cover up her body. All the others are wearing some type of uniforms with numbers on the lapel. Tonya asks them where she is and what is going on.

An older woman tells her to put on some clothes as there is only one set of clothes left in the closet in the room. She also informs Tonya that she’s the last person in the “game” and she can use the toilet to put on her clothes. Inside the bag filled with clothes, Tonya realizes that she also gets half a key, a photograph, and an audio tape filled with instructions. The voice on the tape tells her that she’s a very important part of the game (being the 14th or last contestant) and that she should be wary of the others since people aren’t always what they look like.

As the story progresses, you’ll realize that they have to follow some rules. For example: they should keep their hands clean and they shouldn’t cross a part of the room with a warning sign on the floor. They’re monitored all the time and there is a bed and some chairs in the big room. Every now and then, one of them gets a hint on a piece of paper and they should cooperate to solve them.

As you can expect, temper rises as the game begins, especially since every now and then the lights are turned off and they find at least one contestant dead. They begin to suspect that the killer is among them. Then along the way, they also get such a big hint that among them there are a pedophile, a killer, and a rapist and they should find out which is which.

Who is the killer? Will any one of them emerge alive? What is the story behind the game?

Note:

This is why I find the ending of the movie unsatisfactory, because it fails to answer my questions plausibly. Plus I could guess something already even from the start, so there’s really no “surprising twist” that I had expected in the beginning. I watched this movie with a big expectation that it would give me a “huge bang” at the end, but it couldn’t do so. Frown
