Okie dokie…ready…get set…goooo!!!!
For me, it’s never really clear in the movie whether Bulcsú is the killer or not. I think you can make your own assumptions when the movie ends. Hubby and I discussed about it and we both agree that Bulcsú is really the killer. However, we don’t think that he really realizes this. One time while sleeping like a homeless person on the platform, he dreams about being guided by the girl that he likes (the girl that he meets in the platform, the one with the bear outfit), Szofi (Eszter Balla) into a tunnel and in the deep recess of the tunnel, he finds the hooded killer hunkered inside. He wakes up in cold sweat.
Bulcsú and Szofi agree to meet in a costume party. Bulcsú is on his way to the party when he meets another group of traffic controllers (his competitors) who think he’s the killer. So they beat him up. After resting for a while, he then goes to the party, looking for Szofi. While standing on the “dance floor”, all of a sudden he feels the hooded guy running across him (from behind his back), so he goes after the guy. In the end, he’s the one being chased by the hooded guy. They run and run and run across the railway while a train is behind them. Bulcsú jumps to the platform, but he sees no other sign of the hooded guy after that. I think this is the symbol of the death of “the killer” inside Bulcsú.
Limping, Bulcsú gets away from that platform to find Szofi and he goes out of the train station with Szofi, who dresses like a fairy. I think this act (leaving the station) is the symbol of leaving your past behind and venturing out to embrace new opportunities and new chances of life. It’s again never too clear why Bulcsú left his previous job to be a ticket controller, but something bad must’ve happened since now he’s sleeping on the platform and he doesn’t seem to want to go back to a “normal” life where he has his own place to stay. I think Szofi’s outfit is also a kind of symbol of hope for a better future.
It’s not too easy for me to explain the ending of this movie, since I believe it’s very personal. Somebody else can have a TOTALLY different view about the ending and the symbolism contained in the movie. You’ve just gotta see it yourself to see what you think about it.
