The Future Generation in Wall-E

Published by ailema4ever under Rambling Edit This

Today at work I was thinking of Wall-E. For those of you who’ve seen it, remember the “future human generation” in the spaceship who does nothing but sit on “flying chairs” and chat with one another with a personal computer? At first I thought it was such an exaggeration, but there is truth in what they’re portraying - at least to some degree, don’t you think?

Now that I’ve moved from Indo to Finland and I’m separated from my closest friends (who have now mostly their own kid or kids), I find that it’s actually easier talking to them online rather than meeting them face-to-face. As you know, when there’s a little kid or little kids involved (plus their own jobs), a face-to-face conversation becomes harder than ever. Even finding time to speak on the phone isn’t too easy as different people have different schedules. On the other hand, chatting online becomes such a practical solution since more often than not, those who are ready to chat online DO have time to do so and usually there’s no distraction while you’re chatting online (well, except if your kids wake up and cry or they’re fighting or something).

For some reason, though it is really practical and “cheap” to be able to do this kind of thing with your friends who live around the world, I find it rather disturbing as well. Why? Well, the first year I moved to Finland, I only had one friend (a family) here and since I was home all day (we have no kids), I spent more time blogging and talking to people online rather than meeting them face-to-face. After continuing this for a period of time, I began to FEAR human contact outside my husband’s relatives. It became MUCH easier for me to talk to people online rather than in real life (other than the fact that my Finnish was still so limited back then). This is scary, don’t you think?

What came to your mind when you saw “the future generation” depicted in Wall-E?
