Timescape (1992)

Saw this movie on TV the other day. Never saw this movie before in my life, so I didn’t know what to expect. This sci-fi/mystery movie is based on a novella. Well, this sci-fi has an intriguing plot that even though I was SO sleepy already when I watched it, it kept me awake until the end. But since I’ve seen many other more modern sci-fi movies, this one is not too special. Maybe if I had seen it in 1992, it would have felt more special he he…Anyway, I’ll give this movie a 6.7 stars out of 10.

P.S. It was released in video as “Grand Tour: Disaster in Time”.

Timescape (Grand Tour: Disaster in Time)

The Story:

Ben Wilson (Jeff Daniels) lives with her daughter Hilary Wilson (Ariana Richards). He’s been having trouble with his life since the death of his wife. He felt guilty about his wife’s death, so he turned to drinking for a while, though now he’s ready to start a new life with Hilary. Together they are going to open an inn in an old house. While preparing the house, a strange woman barges into the house. Her name is Madame Iovine (Marilyn Lightstone). She comes with a group of people in a bus. She insists on staying in the inn even though it’s not really ready yet to accept guests.

She says she’s ready to pay no matter how much Ben asks for. So Ben accepts the offer. There are 5 empty rooms in the house other than the rooms for Ben and Hilary themselves, so the guests sleep in the 5 empty rooms. They act weirdly ever since the beginning and this makes Ben wary of them.

After some time, Ben realizes that all the guests come from the future, but he doesn’t know why they are in the past yet. However, one of them warns Ben to get out of the city before tomorrow. Trouble comes when Ben picks up Hilary at school and then the school teacher says that Hilary’s grandpa, Judge Caldwell (George Murdock), has picked her up and taken her home.

Judge Caldwell never liked Ben ever since his daughter’s death. He blamed Ben for being a coward who left his daughter behind after that car accident. Being a judge, he has asked another judge’s help to give Ben a court order, stating that he is an unfit father, so Hilary will be under his care from now on.

Before he tries to get Hilary out of the judge’s house, a meteorite hits the city. It kills many people, leaving devastation everywhere. Many houses are in ruins and everybody who’s still alive is confused. The priest of the city ushers everybody to go to the school to be safe. Ben meets Hilary among the ruins of the city and he asks Hilary to follow the priest, since out of the corner of his eyes, he realizes that his inn guests have come to the city and they look very enthusiastic. It seems like a great spectacle for them.

Then Ben realizes that they have come to witness important events in the past, such as this meteorite crashing to earth. However, they still linger in Ben’s inn, so Ben realizes that there must be some other event that they want to witness. What is the event? Ben follows them and finds out that they are waiting in an old building overlooking the school. So there must be something bad that’s going to happen inside the school. Now Ben is in a panic since Hilary is inside the same school. Will he manage to save Hilary? What will happen to the school?

Spoiler:

Ben doesn’t come to school in time to save Hilary and the others. The guests prepare to leave to go to another event or spectacle in another time. One of them gives Ben a passport and Ben uses it to go back to yesterday ‘coz he wants to save Hilary. He goes back to the past, meets himself in the past (so there are two Bens by now) and then both of them manage to save many people from the meteorite, including Hilary. In the end, they finish redecorating the inn and then he goes back in time to save his wife. The last scene shows Hilary in the inn, hearing her mother playing the piano, so she runs out to meet her.

When Will We Have Time To Watch Movies?

Published by ailema4ever under Rambling Edit This

Hubby bought Wii Fit package along with the Wii Fit board and Wii Fit and Wii Sports CDs and we’ve been using them a lot for the past two days. That’s why we haven’t been able to watch any movies. We still have plenty of movies to watch, but no time. We’re becoming addicted to Wii. Well, it’s probably healthier than watching movies and just sitting down and eating popcorn or chips, but then again it becomes troublesome for me to write reviews in this blog he he he…Wink

Other than that, I’ve been back to studying Finnish at school, so I’ve been busier than ever. Sorry if I can’t drop my EC cards every day, but whenever I have some time, I’ll definitely visit yours back!

Anyway, there’s one thing I find useful in Wii. It’s the boxing game! I truly felt that I could unleash my emotions while boxing with the computer or boxing with hubby. Other than the fact that I can burn some calories that way, I also feel better because I can unload my feelings in a game. I do not like violence in any way, mind you. I don’t want anybody to be violated in any case, but it’s just a game and it’s sports, right?

Hubby also bought this Jeli Sleeve for Wii Fit Board as we don’t want it to be dirty. It feels pretty smooth to the skin. Mind you, though, when I tried doing some Yoga poses with my socks on, I found it hard to keep my body straight since my socks were rather slippery. So I think it’s better to do some poses without any socks on.

Another thing that I like about Wii Fit is that I can also calculate my BMI and record how long I’ve been exercising and stuff. Let’s see how toned my body will be after using Wii for some time. However, I think we also should spend a little time to watch movies so that I can write more reviews here he he he…

Have a FAB weekend, everybody! Laughing

Yesterday (2002)

If you want to see Yunjin Kim (AKA Sun in “Lost” series) in a sci-fi/action Korean movie, then this is the movie. I think this movie is slightly confusing in some parts. I was expecting a clearer explanation at the end, but I didn’t get such a thing. This movie gives me a feeling of slight depression due to the theme. It deals with cloning and science experiments that are taken too far (such as putting kids in cells and injecting aggressiveness into their bodies as well as cloning).

I’ll give this movie a 6.2 stars out of 10, because I think it could have been better!

The Story:

Korea 2020. Seok (Seung-woo Kim) is the leader of an investigation team. His own son is kidnapped by a group of people. This group of people has also been targeting other scientists. Seok tries to save his son, but unfortunately he is dying. Seok puts him in a “freezing capsule” so that he can be kept frozen until technological advances can help him survive in the future.

This group of people then kidnaps the chief of police. His daughter, Huisu (Yunjin Kim) joins in Seok’s team to help out, since she’s an expert in analysing criminal psychology. They then find out that the culprit is someone named Goliath (Min-su Choi). Goliath is actually trying to find Huisu’s real father, who’s gone in disguise. The chief of police is Huisu’s step father. Why does Goliath want to find Huisu’s real father? This man is the connection between Seok, Huisu, and Goliath.

What will happen in the end? Will Seok and Huisu be able to find Huisu’s real father before Goliath does?

Movies and Life: Sex and the City

Published by ailema4ever under Rambling Edit This

Have you seen “Sex and the City” either the series or the movies? I bet you guys don’t watch them he he…

Anyway, the other day I was thinking of the movie and Charlotte’s character (Kristin Davis). She was trying to get pregnant, but it was so hard, so she adopted an Asian girl and then somewhere in the middle of the movie, she realized that she was pregnant. However, she noticed that her friends were facing so many troubles in their lives. So she began to fear that she’ll also run into some type of trouble. She was afraid that her life that was going from good to better to even better will end up in the deepest, darkest, scariest ravine where all her fears would come true.

Have you ever felt that way, too? I felt like that a few times. When my life is getting better and better and it feels too good to be true, sometimes the “Evil Me” tries to write down some type of “doomsday scenario”. “What ifs” start to echo in my brain until I had to gather a really conscious effort to stop those questions. I don’t want to live with any type of doomsday scenario in my head. It’s like living in nightmares, right?

Anyway, speaking about Sex and the City the movie, I wasn’t at all disappointed with it. I still enjoyed watching it as much as I enjoyed watching the series. I cried with them, I laughed with them, and I felt happy when they were happy. Isn’t that a sign of good story?

P.S. Wanna know which Sex and the City character suits you the most? Click here.

Pineapple Express

Published by ailema4ever under Comedy, Crime, Thriller Edit This

This 2008 comedy is pretty funny, though it’s rather crude as it deals with drugs. The screenplay is written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Seth Rogen also plays the main character, btw. Pineapple Express is the name of a drug combo that’s pretty “dangerous” to the brain. You can see stupid actions done by those people who have smoked Pineapple Express in this movie. This movie is rated R for pervasive language, drug use, sexual references and violence, so parents, beware!!!

However, since it cracks me up in many scenes, I’ll give this one a 7 stars out of 10. My fave scene is when two of the guys get into a “fist” fight and one of them pinches the other guy’s nipples (yeah, both of them). Then the other one bites the first guy’s ear. What kind of a fist fight is that? HA HA HA HA HA HA…But that’s what makes it funny anyway. Laughing

Remember, though: STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS!!!! STAY HEALTHY!!!!!!!!!!!

The Story:

Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) is a marijuana addict. He works as a courier for court orders and he has a girlfriend who’s still in High School. He often visits Saul Silver’s (James Franco) apartment ‘coz he’s the drug dealer. When Dale visits Saul this time, he introduces him to Pineapple Express. They smoke marijuana together and then Dale goes out to do his work. He has to give some court order paperwork to Ted Jones (Gary Cole). While smoking Pineapple Express in his car outside Ted’s house, he witnesses a murder. Ted and a police woman shoots an Asian guy several times. Shocked and scared to death, Dale throws away his Pineapple Express and drives as fast as he can to Saul’s place.

After talking to Saul (who’s stoned), Dale finds out that the only person who’s dealing Pineapple Express is Saul and that Ted is actually the one selling the Pineapple Express to Saul. So now Dale realizes his mistake (when he threw out the marijuana) and he believes that they’re both in danger. In a panic, he tells Saul to get out of the house with him and run away to a safe place.

Funny, stupid incidents happen after this as both guys are sought after by bad guys. Thus begins the cat-and-mouse chase. The problem becomes more complicated as the bad guys find out about Dale’s girlfriend and Dale is trying so hard to keep her alive without sounding like a lunatic who tells the story about witnessing a murder and being chased by drug dealers. Who gets caught and who survives?

Tess of the d’Urberville

Last night I saw this 1979 movie on TV. Never read the novel by Thomas Hardy before, so didn’t know anything about the story. Turned out it was a depressing one. The movie was so long, too! Almost 3 hours long! I wasn’t really in the mood to watch a depressing movie, but then again after watching it halfway, I had to know the ending he he he…but I don’t think I’ll ever watch the movie again - not because it’s bad, but because I’m not too keen on depressing stories.

The Story:

Tess (Nastassja Kinski)  is a beautiful young girl from a poor family. One day the father is made to believe that he’s the relatives of a noble family named d’Urberville, so Tess’ parents send Tess away to the d’Urbervilles’ mansion to get a job. There she meets Alec d’Urberville (Leigh Lawson) who seduces her and takes advantage of her. She becomes his mistress for a few months, then she decides to come back home. Turns out she’s pregnant with Alec’s child. She gives birth to a baby boy, but then the boy dies.

She goes away again to find a job as a milking lady and there she meets Angel Clare (Peter Firth). They fall in love and Angel wants to marry her. Tess is dying to tell Angel about her past, but she’s so afraid of losing him. She gathers courage to write a letter to Angel to tell him everything, but the letter gets stuck under the carpet, so Angel never gets it. After the wedding ceremony, Tess tells Angel about her past, since Angel also tells Tess about his past relationship with an older woman. However, Angel is so shocked that he can’t forgive her.

Unable to stand being in the same house, Tess decides to go back home. Angel promises her that when he can forgive her, he’ll go back to get her. Tess says that she’ll wait for him. Life becomes tough again for Tess as she has to do farm work for Alec to help feed the family, especially after her Dad dies and her family loses the house.

Mini Movie Poster:

Spoiler:

Alec manages to persuade Tess that if she wants him to help her family, she has to be his mistress again. So they live together in a huge mansion. Meanwhile, Angel finally realizes that Tess does love him so much, so he tries to find her again, though it’s not easy since Tess’s family has lost their house and they’ve moved away. After asking around, Angel finds out where Tess lives and their meeting is very painful for both, because Tess keeps on saying to him that he’s too late and that Alec has been taking care of her and her family very well.

Angel leaves the house in a sad state and goes to the train station. Tess cries her heart out while Alec tries to annoy her by asking her questions about whether or not she’s crying because of Angel. In a fit of anger, Tess kills Alec and runs out of the house to go to the train station to catch Angel. She gets on the train on time and confesses to Angel about what she has done. The police are now after them. They try to get as farther away from them, but to no avail. In the end, Tess is hanged due to her crime.
